Learn More About Magnetic Separation!

Separator Type
Bunting Magnetics Co. designs and manufactures some of the best magnetic separation equipment in the industry and offers one of the most complete separation lines. Magnetic metal separators are built around either cartridges or plate magnets. To choose between these two types of separators, you need to consider the characteristics of the materials you want to clean and the system through which you will be running them. Cartridge-based separators, like grates and drawer magnets, are designed to handle vertical gravity flow and materials that flow easily and do not form clumps. Plate-based separators can be installed at angles or in pneumatic conveying lines. they are designed to handle materials that exhibit poor flow characteristics, tend to clump, or are coarse and highly abrasive.

The amount of tramp metal you expect to capture and the accessibility of the separator are also considerations in selecting the best equipment for your needs. Self-cleaning and continuous-cleaning models are available to handle heavy contamination and inconvenient locations. The drawing above illustrates some typical installations.

Magnet Material
Product densities, flow rates, operating temperatures, and the type of ferrous contaminants you encounter help determine the choice of magnet material. Ceramic magnets are well suited for typical tramp iron separation. But if operating temperatures are high, consider using Alnico magnets. If product densities and flow rates are high and you occasionally encounter weakly magnetic debris such as fines and even some grades of work-hardened stainless, youʼll want to increase product/magnet contact or use high-energy Rare Earth magnets or do both.

Construction Grade
A number of factors influence the construction standard you should specify. For example, if you handle powdered or granular materials that must flow cleanly through the system, a powder grade model might be the right choice for you. If you handle ingredients or final products intended for human consumption, you need food or sanitary grade separators. For most other applications, choose utility grade.

Bunting Magnetics Co. manufactures an extensive line of magnetic separation equipment to remove ferrous contaminants from dry particulates, liquids, and slurries. We supply everything from basic cartridges, grates, and plate magnets to magnethousings, self-cleaning separators, pulleys, and drums. Magnet Options
You can customize Bunting Magnetics Separation Equipment by selecting the permanent magnetic material thatʼs best for your application. Bunting Permanent Magnets provide continuous, dependable protection year after year with little or no maintenance. They resist demagnetization and wonʼt generate unwanted heat or shut down during a power failure. Ask about our performance and durability guarantee.

Ceramic magnets are the right choice for many common separation applications. They create a strong magnetic field that captures and holds both large and small ferrous objects and debris.

Alnico magnets are naturally heat-resistant and can handle high-temperature applications between 300º and 1000º Fahrenheit. Alnicoʼs magnetic energy and separation capabilities are similar to Ceramic.

Rare Earth Neodymium magnets have the extra magnetic energy required to capture extremely fine or weakly magnetic contaminants and can handle high flow rates and dense materials. They are the standard choice in food industry applications. Bunting Rare EarthSeparation Magnets can be ordered in several grades including our exclusive temperature compensated option.

Heavy Duty Magnetic Cartridges

Bunting Heavy-Duty Cartridges are designed for maximum metal removal and for use where high flow rates or bridging might be a problem or where structurally stronger cartridges are required. They are made with durable,heavy-wall 304 nonmagnetic stainless steel square tubing.
■ Durable, heavier-gauge stainless steel tubing resists wear and lasts longer in demanding applications.
■ High-density Ceramic, Alnico, and Rare Earth magnets are all available.

Drawer Magnets for Free Flowing Material Bunting HF Series Drawer Magnets are
equipped with powerful magnetic cartridges
to handle a wide range of separation tasks in mechanical or gravity flow applications. They can be ordered with one or more cartridge trays. The more trays, the more contact with the product stream. A minimum of two staggered trays is recommended, where space will allow, so that material can flow in a zig-zag pattern from one cartridge tray to the next for exceptionally thorough cleaning. HF Series Drawers are available in utility, powder, food, and sanitary construction grades with three cleaning options and stainless steel housings. We supply custom transitions to match your spouting.

Self-Cleaning Options Save Labor and Downtime

In the standard configuration, ferrous tramp is removed from the cartridges by sliding the trays out of the housing and wiping them off by hand.

Self-Cleaning HF Drawer Magnets are designed to fully extend the magnetic cartridges outside the housing. As these tube assemblies travel outside the housing, grommets wipe the tubes clean all the way to their nonmagnetic tapered ends. This ensures that each cartridge is fully wiped and prevents captured tramp iron from reentering the housings. Self-cleaning models are available in both manual and fully automatic pneumatic versions. Pneumatic units operate at the touch of a remote switch so they can be installed in hard-to-reach locations.
■ Pre-engineered for fast field installation.
■ Transitions available for round, square, or rectangular spouting.
■ Multiple trays of staggered magnetic cartridges provide increased contact with product flow for more complete metal capture.
■ Order Ceramic, Alnico, or Rare Earth
magnets to get the holding force right for your application.
■ Specify mild or stainless steel construction.
■ Housing design allows easy access to magnets.
■ Self-cleaning models offer labor-saving
convenience.

PLATE MAGNETS FOR SPOUTING AND PROCESSING EQUIPMENT

Bunting Plate Magnets install easily in chutes to remove ferrous fines, as well as large pieces of tramp iron, from many types of free-flowing and pneumatically conveyed material. They can handle powdery, moist, lumpy, and abrasive products and large debris that might choke, bridge, or cause rapid wear in cartridge-based separators.

Plate Magnets can also be installed above conveyors or below conveyor drive pulleys to capture contaminants as material drops from open belts. Standard installation kits include
a pre-drilled hinge, latch, and other hardware to ensure easy mounting.

All Bunting Plate Magnets have 100%

leaves the product stream unobstructed.
Tapered transitions guide material directly over
the face of the hinged plate magnet, which
swings away from the housing for quick
external cleaning.

CENTER-FLOW MAGNETS FOR DILUTE-PHASE PNEUMATIC SYSTEMS

Center-Flow In-Line Magnet Separators are
engineered to remove ferrous fines as well as
larger pieces of tramp iron from dry particulates
as they travel through dilute-phase
pneumatic or gravity-flow conveying lines.
To achieve optimum contact with the product
flow, a bullet-shaped magnet is suspended in
the centerline of the housing. This tapered,
exposed-pole cartridge has a stainless steel
“nose cone” to direct the flow of materials
around the magnet. The magnetʼs tapered poles allow ferrous fines to collect out of the direct air stream, and the trailing end of the magnet is an active pole so that any tramp metal that might be swept down the cartridge will collect there.

■ Installs easily in any position with factory
supplied compression couplings.
■ Placement in vertical run makes optimum
use of magnetic field.
■ Durable stainless steel nose cone directs
material around bullet-shaped magnet.
■ Tapered pole design lets metal fines collect out of the air stream.

CROSS-BELT SEPARATORS FOR CONTINUOUS OVER-CONVEYOR SEPARATION AND SELF-CLEANING OPERATION

Cross-Belt Separators provide continuous
removal of ferrous contaminants from material
on open conveyors. Tramp iron falls from the
unitʼs cleated belt as it moves the captured
metal debris beyond the magnetʼs face and out
of the magnetic field.

Bunting 950 Series Magnetic Cross-Belt
Separators
are made for heavy-duty
applications like recycling municipal trash,
construction debris, tires, or heavy plastic
materials. These units provide deep 10"
reachout and will magnetically remove ferrous
material from burden depths of 4 to 8 inches at
belt speeds up to 300 fpm.

DRUM MAGNETS FOR HIGH FLOW RATES AND HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATION

Magnetic Drums and Drum Separators
are self-cleaning and provide continuous removal of ferrous contaminants from a wide range of free-flowing bulk and granular materials in high-volume applications. When material flows onto
the drum, a stationary magnetic assembly inside the unitʼs shell captures tramp metal and holds it securely to the drumʼs stainless steel
surface. With contaminants removed, the good product falls freely to a discharge point. As the drum rotates, cleats sweep the ferrous debris through and out of the magnetic field. The tramp metal is discharged separately, creating continuous self-cleaning separation.
■ Designed for continuous separation and
cleaning.
■ Ideal for highflow, heavy contamination applications.
■ Stainless steel drum and mild steel or stainless steel housings.
